Read the First Chapter of 'Fifty Shades of Grey'

Unless you've been living under a rock (I do sometimes) then you know perfectly well the hype that surrounds E.L James' risque Fifty Shades trilogy - from a top spot on The New York Times best-seller list to a movie deal - Ian Somerhalder, of course, is a top pick among fans for the role of Christian. Though, when is he not a fan favorite for most roles? Seriously.

According to the AP, Fifty Shades is getting banned in public libraries in Wisconsin, Georgia and Florida for being "too steamy or too poorly written," with other states expected to do the same.

If you've been curious about the hype but not sure you want to pick up the book, you can read the first chapter below, courtesy of Random House Australia via Scribd.

So... what do you think of the books getting yanked from shelves?

  1. I tried it a few weeks ago. Overall I'm not impressed. How about you? Will you be reading it?

As for the content, doesn't sound any different than other erotic romances. Are they banned too?

    2. I trudged through until Ana started reading through the contract. I decided that I really didn't care to read where the story was going and I found that I was skimming a lot of the time anyway.

  2. I ended up buying a copy of the first book after watching a TV interview with the author. I haven't started it yet but now I'm a bit anxious after seeing that both you and Juju didn't weren't fans.

  3. I want to try the first one just b/c Wendy Williams keeps mentioning the book. But I really haven't been caught up in the hype of it all. I almost have a feeling I'm not going to enjoy them and I hate saying that without at least trying it.

  4. I read the first three chapters of it online, and I loved it so far!!! Most people say it starts off pretty slow, but you have to read more of the book before you actually start to get in to it....I haven't found fifty shades of gray in stores anywhere i've only found the last two books in the series. I'm so anxious to get the book! but it just depends on what kind of books you like, and if you're in a reading mood or not! but its pretty good so far! You just shouldn't expect too much out of the book at the first few chapters.

    2. I agree. I'm on the 3rd book.....you either hate it or love it....why libraries would ban them is ridiculous.....if you don't like it, don't read it. It's a fun summer book.....I love the series so far.....I'm a mother of 2...and I work part-time.....I've read it just to get away for awhile....I've noticed some people deny liking the book, when they really do....so stupid....its a book....who cares!

    1. Funny you say that as it is Twilight fan fiction... But if you look past the writing it's an interesting spin on the characters...

  11. OMG. Its not just about handcuffs and abuse. How many times were they actually in the red room? not many. ana saves grey from that room and shows him how to have a steamy romance full of love and lust. I thought the book was amazing and hard to put down. Grey feels about her they way must of us only dream. It seems to me that most people who complain about its contents are the ones who have sex once a month in the same position and it last 5 minutes. I can feel the passion as i read it and the book has brought a new spark in my sex life. Just feel the passion! OMG how could you not.

  15. Is anyone else concerned that an eleven year old and a sixteen year old read this? Or young boys thinking this is normal and healthy in a relationship? Imagine these things happening to your daughters! It need s to monitored and rated like a movie or violent video game.

    1. I'm fifteen, and I've read all three books. I don't think it needs to be rated because in all honesty, not many people my age actually read books. I loved Fifty Shades, and not because of the sexual acts in it, I loved it because of her style of writing. The book, although filled with sex, was cleverly written in a way that appealed to readers. If girls are reading this, then they must be like me- emotionally mature enough to handle such erotic scenes. I do not wish to be tied up and hit, and I know that such a relationship isn't healthy. It doesn't need to be rated because the readers can think for themselves, and if they're only reading it for the sex, then let them.

  23. I've only read a sample of text so far and it didn't seem extremely well written but it is a fan fiction so not too surprising. I'm going to try to find the whole first book online before judging. I'm a passion parties independent consultant and our winter line is called Shades of Winter and is based on the book so I figure I should read it. Facebook.com/PassionPartiesByCarolyn

  24. I can't take it. It's bland, there is no real feeling in any of the words. And the throughts of where this story came from first. No, this doesn't work for me.
Trolls stories at least give me a laugh now and then, this is... No bad words...No bad words.
This book is not for me, I love hardcore smut, but if it doesn't play, its not worth read.
Sorry, this story was a miss with me.
    Bye!
