The First Bookless Library Set to Open This Fall

San Antonio intends to open the first bookless public library system in America this fall.  For those of you wondering what that might look like, you can get a clear idea by walking into an Apple store, apparently. You can also view a mock up of the interior below.

It was while reading Walter Isaacson's biography of Steve Jobs that Bexar County Judge (and book lover), Nelson Wolff, got the idea of the Public Library "enhancement" - a library designed for the digital age, offering a collection of e-books and even e-readers that you can check out just like a library book.

  1. Pretty cool. I like how they are starting to accommodate those who have embraced the digital age. I think there is room and demand enough for digital libraries as well as traditional. Very cool.

  2. Whoaaaaaaaa! Too neat. I can't wait to hear more about this. I'm one of those gals that due to my little one being so tiny, so monkey like, so want to crawl and pull books down, that I use my library primarily from my iPod (for eBooks and audios).

  3. It's about damn time - the future of the library system and reading in general is the electronic book, not the dead tree edition.
